HANAHAN, S.C. - With two freshmen in the starting lineup, the women's golf team is in 16th place after the first round of their first tournament of the 2007-2008 season.
The Nittany Lions shot 14-over 302 in the first round of the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston. Sophomore Katherine Murphy and junior Christin Pacacha, who both shot an impressive two-over 74, lead the Nittany Lions going into the second round.
Freshmen Giulia Carando and Brianna Malcolmson made their first collegiate tournament appearance in the Cougar Classic. Carando finished round one only two strokes behind Murphy and Pacacha with a score of four-over 76. Junior Megan Padua, the fifth member of the team, shot six-over 78.
The competition is close, with the College of Charleston and Furman only one stroke ahead of Penn State and UNC Greensboro one stroke behind. Alabama and Louisiana State are tied for first place with scores of two-under 286.
