UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's lacrosse head coach Suzanne Isidor has announced that senior midfielder Jessi Lieb (Villanova, Pa.) and junior midfielder Kerry Shea (Baltimore, Md.) will serve as team captains for the 2008 season.
"Jessi and Kerry are tremendous leaders and role models," said Isidor. "Their commitment to the program and to its success is unmatched. They are ready to lead Penn State to the next level in 2008."
Despite missing part or all of Penn State's final five games in 2007 due to injury, Jessi Lieb earned First Team IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-West/Midwest Region honors for the second straight season. A two-time First Team All-ALC selection, Lieb was a force for the Nittany Lions on both ends of the field a year ago, ranking among team leaders in goals (26), assists (13), points (39), ground balls (32), and caused turnovers (19). A Tewaaraton Trophy preseason candidate in 2006 and 2007, she has been a member of the U.S. Developmental Team for two consecutive years.
In 2007, in just her second season in Happy Valley, Kerry Shea earned Second Team IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-West/Midwest Region and All-ALC honors. A speedy and aggressive midfielder, she ended the 2007 season as the Nittany Lions' leading goal scorer (27) and finished tied for second on the team in draw controls (23) and ground balls (32) and third in points (35). Coming to Penn State as a highly touted prospect in 2006, Shea netted 10 goals in seven games but saw her promising freshman campaign and strong bid for ALC Rookie of the Year ended by a leg injury.
The Penn State women's lacrosse team is scheduled to open the 2008 season on Sun., Feb. 17 when the Nittany Lions host Cornell in a 12:30 p.m. scrimmage. Isidor returns 22 letterwinners and six starters from last year's 9-8 squad.
