University Park, Pa. - Mallory Weisen scored both Penn State goals, one in the first half and one in the second half and Jen Beaumont made four saves in goal to record the first shutout of the year that resulted in a Penn State win as the No. 7 Nittany Lions topped Temple 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at AstroTurf Field. The win improves Penn State to 4-2 on the year in what was the second game of a three-game homestand.
Both of Weisen's goal came off penalty corners, but both were different in the way they were scored. Her first tally of the day came at the 8:58 mark of the first half as after Jen Long set the corner that was taken by Allison Scola, Weisen's shot was right on and deflected off the outstretched goalkeeper's pads and high into the top of the cage. Since her initial shot was low enough as required following a penalty corner, the goal counted for her second of the year to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Long and Scola were credited with the assists.
Then, at the 55:30 mark in the second half, Weisen once again took a ball off the stick of Long following Scola's penalty corner but this time, instead of taking the shot from the top of the circle, dribbled in and to her right and curled around a pair of defenders to get a more open shot, which she one-timed into the lower left corner of the cage to put Penn State up 2-0.
The two goals for Weisen gave her the first multiple-goal game of her career and also a career high for points in a game with four, surpassing her previous high of two.
On defense, Beaumont played well, making four saves to officially record her second shutout of the year, but the first that has resulted in a Penn State victory. Beaumont also did not allow a goal during regulation against James Madison in 100 minutes last Friday, a game that Penn State dropped in penalty strokes. In fact, dating back to last Wednesday's game at Princeton, Beaumont and the Nittany Lion defense have not allowed a goal in the last 223:37 minutes of play, just under 40 minutes shy of her previous streak of now allowing goals, which was 260:47 last year, also during the month of September.
Both teams had seven shots and each put four on goal, with Beaumont saving all four for the Nittany Lions, including three in the second half. Temple's Erin Hanshue made one save while the Owls also had a defensive save in the first half.
The Nittany Lions will wrap up their three-game homestand on Friday night as they take on their second straight Atlantic 10 opponent in West Chester. Game time is 6:00 p.m. on AstroTurf Field.
