UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's lacrosse head coach Suzanne Isidor has announced the signing of seven recruits for the 2008 season. Composed of three midfielders, two swing players, one defender, and one attacker, the class has been ranked No. 9 in the nation by Inside Lacrosse magazine.
"I am excited about the class of 2011," said Isidor, who is entering her eighth year at the helm of the Nittany Lions. "It is a class comprised of seven very talented student-athletes who should have an immediate impact on the Penn State lacrosse program. This class' hallmark will be its speed and athleticism. The staff has no doubts that these student-athletes will not only be successful on the field but also achieve great things in the classroom."
Ashley Boccio, a defender/midfielder from Northport, N.Y., comes to Happy Valley to join her sister Jess, a senior goalkeeper on the Penn State women's lacrosse team. A member of Northport High School's three-time Suffolk County Championship teams, Boccio was named its most valuable defender for three consecutive years and earned All-American and Academic All-American honors in 2007. An accomplished athlete, she earned a total of nine letters competing on the Northport Tigers' lacrosse, track, and soccer teams. As a senior, she captained all three squads.
Maggie Dunbar comes to Penn State after an accomplished high school career at Saint Paul's School for Girls in Broolandville, Md. Hailing from Cockeysville, Md., Dunbar was named First Team Baltimore County and Second Team All-Metro by the Baltimore Sun in 2006 and 2007. A two-time IAAM Varsity A Conference All-Star, Dunbar helped lead the Gators to two IAAM Varsity A Regular Season Championships (2004-05) and two IAAM Varsity A Conference Tournament Championships (2004, 2006). An excellent athlete, Dunbar earned 10 total letters in lacrosse, soccer, and basketball.
Jackie Eastman, a native of Springfield, Pa., was a highly decorated three-sport high school athlete. As a midfielder on the Springfield H.S. lacrosse team, Eastman was a three-time First Team All-Delco and First Team All-Central League selection. As a senior, she received Team MVP, All-American, and Delaware County Times Player of the Year honors. Eastman led the Cougars to Central League Championships in 2004 and 2007 and to PIAA District I Championships in 2004, 2006, and 2007. An all-around standout athlete, Eastman was a four-year starter on the Springfield soccer team, setting the record for goals in a season, and a three-year starter on the basketball squad, earning Second Team All-Delco accolades in 2006.
Playing the attack position, Megan Hollerbach notched 11 goals and 13 assists in 2007 at Broadneck H.S., leading the Bruins to a runner-up finish in Anne Arundel County and the regional semifinals. The Annapolis, Md. native, won with the Gerry Case Award as a senior, an honor presented to the athlete who overcame significant challenges to compete at a high level, after coming back strong from an ACL injury suffered her junior year. As a four-year varsity member of the field hockey team at Broadneck, she was named Second Team All-County by the Baltimore Sun and earned Honorable Mention All-Metro by the Washington Post in 2005. Hollerbach played her club lacrosse with CCLAX '07 Black, helping it win the 2006 Loyola 4v4 Tournament.
In her senior season at North Harford H.S. in Pylesville, Md., team captain Laura Lesnick recorded 55 points and headlined a Hawks squad that went 17-2, won county and regional championships, and advanced to the state finals. For her standout play in 2007, the midfielder was selected First Team All-County by the Baltimore Sun for the second consecutive year and was named an Under Armour All-American. A three-year varsity starter, Lesnick led North Harford to 40 wins, registering 92 goals and 31 assists. Also, a three-year letterwinner in soccer, she led the Hawks to the regional finals in 2006.
Midfielder/attacker Jen Steadman joins the Nittany Lions touting an impressive high school resume. The Century H.S. graduate from Sykesville, Md., is a former three-time First Team All-County and All-Conference honoree and a two-time First Team All-Metro selection, high school All-American, and Carroll County Player of the Year. Steadman played a major role in helping the Knights secure state championships in 2004, 2006, and 2007. She finished her high school career with a remarkable 263 goals and 129 assists, becoming Carroll County's record holder for career goals and total points (392). Steadman excelled in other sports at the high school level as well, claiming all-conference honors in soccer and all-county accolades in basketball.
By committing to Penn State, Katy Wick, a midfielder from Winter Springs, Fla., renews her family ties with the university established by her uncle, Rocco English, a Nittany Lion football player under Joe Paterno in the early 1970s. Wick starred at Winter Springs H.S., leading the Bears to an 18-3 record as a senior, notching a career-high 44 goals and 10 assists en route to garnering All-American honors for the second consecutive year. A first team all-conference selection for four consecutive years in high school and a First Team All-Central Florida pick in 2006, Wick finished her career with 119 goals and 58 assists.
