Ann Arbor, Mich. - For the second straight Sunday, the Penn State field hockey team had trouble finding the back of the net as the seventh-ranked Nittany Lions went scoreless again and fell to No. 12 Michigan 1-0 in the Big Ten opener for the Nittany Lions. Penn State falls to 5-4 on the year and will now return home to begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday vs. Lock Haven.
Michigan, which was coming off a win over No. 3 Iowa on Friday in its Big Ten opener, scored the lone goal of the game in the 11th minute as Meredith Way knocked in a rebound off a hard shot to the left of the cage at the 10:21 mark.
Penn State was held to just four shots, all of which came in the first half. The Nittany Lions were also only able to generate one penalty corner, which also came in the first half. Michigan had six penalty corners but did not score off any of them as all six came in the second half. Penn State did outshoot Michigan 4-3 in the first half.
Jen Beaumont made eight saves for the Nittany Lions in goal, seven coming in the second half.
The Nittany Lions will next take on the Lock Haven Eagles on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. on AstroTurf Field.
