MORGANTOWN, WVa. - A goal by Mountaineer Kiley Harris in the 79th minute lifted No. 23 West Virginia over No. 15 Penn State, 1-0, in women's soccer action on Sunday. No. 15 Penn State fell to 2-2 on the year after leaving in a late goal at No. 23 West Virginia (3-1) to complete a brutal road stretch that included three games against ranked teams in nine days to start the 2007 season. The team finally comes home to the friendly confines of Jeffrey Field this weekend, but the tough schedule continues as James Madison and No. 3 Texas A&M are on the docket next for the Nittany Lions.
Harris' goal came at the 79:12 mark off an assist from Amanda Cicchini and was all the Mountaineers would need. Nittany Lion goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher (Seymour, Conn.) had done an incredible job throughout the day, amassing seven saves, but couldn't get to the deciding goal.
Sophomore Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) led the Nittany Lion offense with three shot attempts, but it was not to be for Penn State as the final tally left them one short.
The nine-time defending Big Ten Champion Nittany Lions finally return home this weekend to host the Penn State Invitational. No. 3 Texas A&M and West Virginia meet on Friday night to start the Invitational at 5 p.m. Penn State then hosts James Madison at 7:30 p.m. The Nittany Lions are looking to pack Jeffrey Field on Sunday, Sept. 16, for their 1 p.m. contest with the fifth-ranked Aggies. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and will highlight activities coinciding with September being Youth Soccer Month.
