Easton, Pa. - A goal at the end of the first half for Penn State proved to be the difference in a closely-contested game as the No. 9 Nittany Lions topped Lafayette in non-conference action on Wednesday night 1-0. The win improves Penn State to 10-4 and gives the Nittany Lions 10 wins for the 30th straight season, currently the longest active streak for double digit wins in the country.

The win also improves Penn State's all-time record to 13-1 against Lafayette and is the 23rd straight win for the Nittany Lions over in-state competition. The win is also Penn State's fifth shutout of the year and the third in its last four games.

Although the Nittany Lions kept the ball on Lafayette's end of the field for most of the first half, Penn State managed just four shots in the first 30 minutes of the half as the game remained scoreless. Then, at the 31:31 mark, Penn State broke through for the first goal of the game, capitalizing off a penalty corner as Kiersten Wood scored her fifth goal of the year. Just to the left of the goal about in the middle of the circle, she took a pass from Jen Long and one-timed a hard shot past the Lafayette keeper. The assist gave Long assists in five straight games and was her 10th of the year.

Penn State dodged a minor bullet at the end of the first half as Lafayette was awarded its first penalty corner of the night just before time expired but a hard shot from the right side by the Leopards that was right on was saved by Jen Beaumont.

With just over 16 minutes left in the second half, the Nittany Lions were able to dodge a few more bullets as the Leopards were awarded back-to-back penalty corners. Both shots off the corners were saved by Beaumont and although both rebounds came off near to Lafayette attackers, there were just able to be cleared away before any other shots could be taken.

The Leopards had a few more chances towards the end of the second half with the ball on Penn State's end but were unable to get off any shots. Penn State outshot Lafayette 11-4 in the game. Beaumont made saves on three of Lafayette's four shots.

Penn State returns home on Sunday to face Michigan State at noon on AstroTurf Field. That game will feature Senior Day prior to the game and will also be Think Pink Day.
