UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's volleyball team has moved into the top spot in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Poll, American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) officials announced today. The Nittany Lions (20-2, 12-0 Big Ten) moved up one spot and earned 1,455 total points in the poll along with 26 first-place votes. Defending national champion Nebraska (19-1), who has held the top spot in 41 of the last 43 polls dating back to 2005, moves into second place with 1,444 points and 25 first-place votes. Texas (16-3), Washington (20-1) and Stanford (20-2) round out the top five spots in the poll.
The last time Penn State held the No. 1 ranking was the final poll in 1999, the year the squad captured the NCAA National Championship, and this week marks the 26th overall time the Nittany Lions have claimed the top spot in the poll. The last Big Ten team to own the top billing in the country was Minnesota, who claimed the No. 1 ranking for three weeks in 2004 (Sept. 13, Sept. 20, Sept. 27).
Penn State hosts Purdue and Indiana this weekend at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions and Boilermakers square off on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. ET in a contest that will be broadcast on a tape-delay basis on ESPN2 on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 12:00 p.m. ET. Penn State then faces the Hoosiers on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
