Game Notes vs. Old Dominion (11/27/07)
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Lady Lions (5-1) travel to Norfolk, Va., to face a tough foe in 16-time Colonial Athletic Association champion Old Dominion (4-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Both teams are receiving votes in this week's Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls.
The game will be broadcast in the Virginia Beach area on WSKY-TV. The game can also be heard on the Penn State Sports Radio Network with Jerry Fisher (play-by-play) and Chris Morelli (analyst) describing play. Locally the game will air on the radio on WMAJ. The Lady Lions are 5-6 all-time against Old Dominion, but picked up an 80-77 win in the Jordan Center last season. The two teams have played each of the last seven years with the home team winning each meeting.?Penn State dropped a 93-61 decision to the Monarchs in their last visit to Norfolk in Nov. 2005.
The Lady Lions used a 13-0 run in the middle portion of the second half and staved off a late charge by Drexel to post a 66-60 win over the Dragons on Sunday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center. Tyra Grant (Youngstown, Ohio) led four Lady Lions in double figures with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Mashea Williams (Erie, Pa.) had a solid all-around game with 11 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Grant leads the team and is fifth in the Big Ten in scoring with a 16.8 per game mark. She is also eighth in the conference in field goal percentage (.559), second in three-point field goal percentage (.500) and tied for seventh in three-pointers made (1.7). Kam Gissendanner (Clairton, Pa.) is having a solid senior season as she ranks 10th in the Big Ten in both scoring (13.7) and rebounding (7.3). She surpassed the 900-point plateau for her Penn State career against Drexel Sunday.
The Lady Monarchs are 4-2 this season and are coming off of a 66-53 victory over Purdue at the Paradise Jam Sunday. T.J.?Jordan is the top scoring threat for ODU, averaging 16.2 points per game. Jessica Canady is accounting for 10.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game off the bench.
The Lady Lions return to the Bryce Jordan Center Sunday to host #11/10 Duke in the inaugural Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge at 5 p.m. The game is a 4 for $40 night in which fans will receive four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for $40. Sunday's game will also feature a reversible Lady Lion winter hat giveaway while supplies last.
