Jan. 14, 2008

University Park, Pa. - With the 2008 season just over a month away and season tickets already on sale, the Penn State baseball team received a piece of good news recently as the Nittany Lions not only posted one of the best improvements on the field last season but the Nittany Lions also shot up the national rankings for attendance during the 2007 season. In attendance numbers from 2007 that were recently released by the NCAA, Penn State ranked 44th in average attendance for the 2007 season, averaging 1,470 fans per home date in its first season at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Over the 18 home dates, which included five weekend Big Ten doubleheaders for a total of 23 home games, the Nittany Lions attracted a total of 26,459 fans to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The average attendance of 1,470 ranked second in the Big Ten behind only Ohio State's 2,073 in 20 dates. Penn State also ranked very high among predominantly northern schools as only Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon State and Creighton had better average attendance among that group.

The total and average attendance numbers for 2007 was easily a new attendance record for Penn State baseball. The Nittany Lions also easily shattered the single-game mark for attendance several times in 2007, topping out with a crowd of 3,946 against Northwestern on April 21. Prior to last season, the attendance record for a single date was 1,815 in 2004. Last year, Penn State topped that mark four times and had crowds of over 1,500 seven times.

The Nittany Lions are scheduled to play 23 more home games this year, which currently span over 19 dates, including the four Big Ten weekend doubleheaders. Season tickets may be purchased by calling the State College Spikes ticket office at at (814) 272-1711 or 1-877-SPIKES or by stopping by the Spikes ticket office in person at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
