Wiregrass Classic Game Notes (pdf)
University Park, Pa. - The Penn State baseball team will travel to Dothan, Ala. for the second weekend of the 2008 season where they will play in the ScreenTech Wiregrass Classic, an annual tournament played in Dothan that is hosted by nearby Troy. This is the eighth annual Wiregrass Classic and it features Penn State, Troy, Kennesaw State and Wake Forest.
The Nittany Lions will open the tournament by playing the host Trojans of Troy at 7:00 (ET)/6:00 (CT) on Friday. Penn State will then play the early games on both Saturday and Sunday, taking on the Kennesaw State Owls at 11:00 a.m. (ET)/10:00 (CT) on Saturday and then wrapping up the weekend with a 10:00 a.m. (CT) contest against the Deamon Deacons on Sunday.
This weekend will mark just Penn State's second-ever trip to the state of Alabama for competition. The only other trip was a spring break trip back in teh 1995 season that saw the Nittany Lions play Alabama, UAB, Samford and Auburn in a week-long span.
On Saturday, Penn State will be meeting Kennesaw State for the first time in program history. The Owls are new to Division I but are a strong program as they were picked to finish second in the Atlantic Sun Conference this year. The Nittany Lions have a 1-1 all-time mark against Troy and a 1-3 all-time mark against Wake Forest. Both the Trojans and Deamon Deacons played in the NCAA Tournament last season.
All games this weekend will have live stats provided by host Troy. They can be found by using the link provided on the Penn State baseball schedule or by clicking here,
