UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - For the third time in the past five weeks, men's basketball's Talor Battle (Albany, N.Y.) and women's track and field's Shana Cox (Westbury, N.Y.) have been named the Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week.
With a career high 28 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and seven three-pointers, Battle led Penn State to a 69-61 victory over Big Ten rival Michigan. The freshman had the hot hand, shooting a blistering 10-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the three-point range.
The guard had 15 points and seven rebounds at halftime to help the Nittany Lions to a 37-29 lead. After falling hard and bruising his tailbone in the second half, he returned to the game and helped Penn State back from a two-point deficit by combining with senior Mike Walker for six straight three-pointers in an 18-3 Penn State run that put PSU in control.
Cox refuses to slow down as the indoor season is in its final weeks. With a pair of individual wins and a victory in the 4x400-meter relay, she helped the Nittany Lions to a total of 121 points and a third overall finish in the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Cox has now acquired an impressive 12 conference titles during her Penn State career.
The sprinter won the 400-meter with the time of 53.40 beating conference rival and 2006 NCAA Champion Kineke Alexander of Iowa. Cox also stole the victory in the 200-meter winning a provisional 24.06. Finally, the senior anchored the 4x400 relay, which cruised to a 3:40.43 victory, bettering the field by four seconds.
