UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Penn State men's tennis team has been named as an ITA All-Academic Team accolades for the second straight season. The award is given out annually to those collegiate men's tennis squads with a cumulative team 3.20 or better grade point average (GPA). Additionally, sophomore Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) and freshman Jake Toole (Sharon, Mass.) were selected as ITA Scholar-Athletes for having a 3.50 or better GPA. It is the second ITA academic award for St-Maurice in his career.
St-Maurice was 15-8 in singles play last season, including a 7-2 mark against conference opponents. He was stout in the sixth singles slot during the spring with an 8-3 record. St-Maurice also owned a 6-4 record in doubles play with four different partners.
Toole was 7-6 in singles action in his rookie season. He earned a 3-3 mark in the spring while playing fifth and sixth singles. He also combined with three different partners to post a 6-3 record in doubles play in 2007-08.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2007 and spring 2008).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
