UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The United States used a huge 4-0 victory over New Zealand on Tuesday to win Group G and advance to the quarterfinals. Penn State head coach Erica Walsh watched from the sidelines as an assistant to head coach Pia Sundhage as the U.S. captured victories over Japan and New Zealand while falling to Norway to capture the Group G title.
Canada with two-time Penn State All-American Erin McLeod (2004-05) in goal advanced to the quarterfinals by finishing third in Group E. The Canadians qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Argentina 2-1, tying China 1-1 and falling to Sweden 2-1.
The two teams will meet tomorrow (Aug. 15) at 6 a.m. ET. This will be the fifth meeting between the two sides this year with the U.S. holding a 3-0-1 record against the Canadians. The last meeting between the two sides came at in the Peace Queen Cup Championship match in which the U.S. defeated Canada 1-0.
