William & Mary Invitational Brackets - Day Two

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Penn State women's tennis team finished its second day at the William & Mary Invitational with a strong showing from freshman Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine). The tournament concludes Sunday with several Nittany Lions in action.

"Competition gets harder as you move through the tournament, but I thought we had our bright spots today," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "(Maria) Prishlyak is adjusting well to college tennis and played smart in her singles win."

Prishlyak handled William & Mary freshman Katie Kargl in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-1. In the semifinal, Prishlyak came up short in a hard-fought three set match against Emily Carbone of Arkansas (6-4, 5-7, 6-1). She will face Ohio State's Julie Voss in the third-place match on Sunday morning.

In other singles play, senior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) fell to #94 Katarina Zoricic of William & Mary (6-1, 6-4) in the quarterfinal round and moved on to the fifth-place match after #46 Ela Kaluder of Arkansas withdrew. Freshman Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland) beat Paige Kensrue of Elon in the consolation bracket (6-4, 7-5), but later fell to Lauren Cash of Boston College in straight sets (6-4, 6-2).

Also in singles action, junior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) dropped her quarterfinal match to Ohio State's Julie Voss in two sets (6-2, 6-4). Junior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) came up short in her quarterfinal match against Harvard's Holly Cao (6-0, 6-1), but bounced back for a 6-4, 6-3 win over Elon's Melissa Wolf in the consolation bracket. Senior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) dropped her quarterfinal match to Boston College's Alina Sullivan (6-1, 6-0), but came back to post a 6-3, 6-2 win over Elon's Whitney Butcher to move on to the fifth-place match. Freshman Allie Hefter (Longmont, Colo.) was defeated by Isabel Arana of Richmond, 6-2 and 6-1.

After posting two doubles victories on Friday, McCarthy and Prishlyak dropped an 8-3 decision to Boston College's Katharine Attwell and Lana Krasnopolsky in the semifinals. The pair wil face Emily Carbone and Kate Lukomskaya of Arkansas in the third-place match Sunday morning. Also in doubles play, Holzberg and Lotto's tournament came to an end with an 8-2 loss to Anna Milian and Elisa Simoneeti of Elon.
