Penn State's Kevin Foley Finishes Third at Fighting Illini Invitational; Men's Golf Team 10th

Sept. 21, 2008

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Junior Kevin Foley (Sommerville, N.J.) fired a third-round two-over par (72) to finish in third place at even par (210) when the dust settled at the Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday. Foley kick-started the day birdying the first hole to set the tone for the rest of the tournament. He also birdied holes 7 and 10, both proving to be difficult holes for the rest of the field.

"Kevin played great golf this weekend," said head coach Greg Nye. "He beat out the 2008 Big Ten Champion Jorge Campillo of Indiana and some national champions (UCLA) in this tournament. That is a huge success and a big deal for us."

Sophomore Tommy McDonagh (Wilton, Conn.) shot a two-over par (72) round three to finish tied for 11th. His three-day total concluded at four-over par (214).

"I am really impressed with McDonagh and Foley's play, they carried us this weekend," said Nye. "I have been really impressed with Tommy's play sense July. A lot of his shots were not in the fairways so he did some hard work to finish as well as he did [11th place]."

They Nittany Lions concluded play in 10th place after a third round 17-over par finish. The Lions finished at 40-over par (880) to conclude the three-day tournament. Illinois topped the leader board with a three-day total of 12-over par (852).

"We showed little depth this weekend," said Nye. "That is something that we have to work on."

Freshman Nick Archambault (St-Jean-Sur-Rich, Q.C., Canada) finished tied for 39 with a 14-over par (224) total. He concluded round three at six-over par (76). Senior Matt Leon (Ontario, Canada) finished tied for 71 with a 25-over par (235) three-day total. Junior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) finished with a 27-over par (237).

The Nittany Lions will continue play next week in Richmond, Va. for the VCU Shootout. Play begins on September 29 and will conclude on the Sept. 30.
