UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Four members of the Penn State men's tennis team will be in action at the Georgia Tech Invitational and the D'Novo All-American Championships over the next nine days.
Juniors Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, QC, Canada), along with sophomore Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) will make the trip to Atlanta, Ga. for the Georgia Tech Invitational, while senior Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) will attend the All-American Championships at Tulsa, Okla. The Georgia Tech Invitational will be held Oct. 3-5, while the All-American Championships will take place Oct. 6-8.
Penn State will be one of 14 schools represented at the Georgia Tech Invitational. The tournament consists of 64 total players divided into two 32-player single draws and two doubles draws. Teams joining the Nittany Lions at the event are Armstrong Atlantic State, Auburn, Clemson, Davidson, Furman, Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee State, UNC-Wilmington, Southern Mississippi and Vanderbilt.
Gormley and St-Maurice will represent the Nittany Lions in the Singles A Draw, while Bourchier will participate in the Singles B Draw. Also, Gormley and Bourchier will team up to participate in the Doubles A Draw.
Competition will begin at 8 a.m. each day. The first rounds in both singles and doubles draws will begin Friday, followed by two rounds of singles and one round of doubles on Saturday. The semifinals and finals for both singles and doubles will conclude the event on Sunday.
Following this weekend's event, Lynch will take the courts at the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on Monday. The tournament will feature the top-ranked players across the country, starting with a 256-player pre-qualifying singles tournament from Oct. 3-5. Following that, a 128-player qualifying tournament will take place on Oct. 6-8. The 64-player main draws will take place Oct. 9-12.
Lynch, who is one of the two Nittany Lions' team captains, ranked 12th in the ITA Northeast Region's Final rankings last season. So far this fall, Lynch was 1-2 in the PSU Fall Classic. His win came in a three-set victory over Peter Capkovik of Princeton (7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-1).
Bourchier heads to Georgia Tech with a 2-1 record thus far in singles action this for the fall. He earned his two victories at the PSU Fall Classic over Alex Vuckovic of Princeton (6-3, 6-1) and Rob Lowe of N.C. State (6-2, 6-1). Bourchier will be teaming up with Gormley in doubles for the first time this fall.
Joining Bourchier will be Gormley, who is 1-2 this fall in singles competition, with his victory coming in straight-sets over Ricky Doverspike of Alabama (6-4, 7-6 (5)). Gormley has teamed up with freshman Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) this fall in doubles, going 2-1.
St-Maurice, the third Nittany Lion at the Georgia Tech Invitational, is 1-2 in singles this fall, with his victory coming over George Carpeni of Princeton (6-2, 6-4).
Following the Georgia Tech Invitational and the All-American Championships, the Nittany Lions will participate in the ITA Regionals in New Haven, Conn. on Oct. 16-21. Following that, the Big Ten Indoor Championships will take place on Oct. 30-Nov. 3 in Madison, Wis.
