AUSTIN, Texas - For the second-straight start, T.J. Macy allowed one earned run but failed to get any run support as No. 4 Texas shut out Penn State 1-0 in the nightcap of a doubleheader in Austin, Texas on Saturday.
Macy (0-1) hurled a complete game, gave up five hits and struck out seven Longhorns.
Cole Green ousted Macy's performance. Green also whiffed seven Nittany Lion batters and let up five hits.
Grant Youngblood poked two singles for his second multi-hit game of the series. Blake Lynd, Cory Wine and Bobby Jacobs each had a hit for Penn State.
Texas delivered the game's lone run in the bottom of the second inning off of two singles. Tant Shepherd started the inning with a base hit and was brought home by a David Hernandez single that dropped in shallow right field. Macy struck out three batters to close out the frame.
Green retired nine batters in a row during the middle stretch of the game. Youngblood ended the streak with a single to left field in the top of the sixth inning.
Macy went more than four complete innings without allowing a Texas hit, shutting down Longhorn hitters between the third and sixth frames. The streak came to an end in the seventh when Cameron Rupp shot a groundball up the middle that ricocheted off Macy's left leg.
A potential big inning from Texas was thwarted by Macy after Rupp's single in the seventh. Hernandez, who had Texas' only multi-hit game, followed suit with a single of his own to put Rupp in scoring position with one out. The Longhorns would be unable to prevail as Macy forced Connor Rowe and Travis Tucker to fly out to centerfield and second base, respectively.
Macy prevented the Longhorns from scoring in the eighth inning. The senior from Boise, Idaho let up a lead-off walk but a fielder's choice and a 4-6-3 double play would keep Texas' lead at one run going into the ninth.
Youngblood supplied his fifth hit of the series to start off the ninth inning. Austin Wood came in to relieve Green. Wood struck out Mike Deese and Cory Wine to get his second save of the day.
Sean Deegan made his first career start.
