Bouchelle Receives Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award

March 30, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Zoe Bouchelle (Cockeysville, Md.) added to her list of outstanding achievements on Sunday at the Student Awards Recognition. She became the second women's soccer player in Penn State history to receive the Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award. Joanna Lohman was the first women's soccer player to earn this prestigious honor and was selected in 2005.

Presented by President Graham B. Spanier, the Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award annually recognizes a senior man and woman who have combined successful athletic participation with academic excellence. The award is named for Ernest B. McCoy who was dean of Penn State's College of Physical Education from 1952 to 1970. He was also the University's athletic director.

"Zoe set a very high standard both on and off the field for Penn State Student-Athletes," said head coach Erica Walsh. "Her positive outlook and attitude made every day better for all of us."

Bouchelle was a Soccer Buzz Third Team All-American and a two-time NSCAA First Team All-Great Lakes selection. In addition, she earned back-to-back First Team All-Big Ten nods in the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Throughout her career, she neutralized scoring threats on defense and made big plays happen on offense. She played a vital role in securing Big Ten Championships for the Nittany Lions in all her years to give Penn State the longest active streak of 11 consecutive conference titles. Her most memorable performance came in the 2008 Big Ten Tournament when she assisted both goals in a 2-1 win over Iowa and added another in a 1-0 victory over Michigan State propelling the Nittany Lions to the championship game.

An excellent student, she earned her second ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolade as well as NSCAA Scholar All-American recognition. More recently, she was honored with the Rodney Swineford Memorial Award at the women's soccer awards banquet.

"Zoe is a great leader and represents what all Penn State students should strive to emulate in college and beyond," said Walsh. "We are all better people for crossing paths with Zoe, and are very proud to have her as a part of the Penn State soccer family."
