Boilermakers Pen Nittany Lions, 9-3, to Grasp Baseball Series

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Purdue baseball team opened up a 4-2 game by scoring five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Nittany Lions, 9-3, on Sunday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Penn State now moves to 19-14 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten.

Ryan Boonie - now in a starting role - had two hits, the team's lone RBI, a double and the first triple of his career. Boonie (State College, Pa.) went 5-for-8 for the season to raise his batting average 72 points.

Mike Lorentson (Springfield, Pa.) pitched seven strong and allowed three earned runs while striking out five batters.

Five starters from Purdue had multi-hit games. Alex Jaffee had three hits while Eric Charles tabbed three RBIs.

Matt Morgan took the victory for the Boilermakers. Morgan tossed a complete game and let up two earned runs on 148 pitches. Two of the three Purdue starting pitchers this weekend pitched over 145-pitch complete games.

Jordan Steranka (Pittsburgh, Pa.) doubled and scored a run to extend a season-best 16-game hitting streak. The freshman third baseman now owns the ninth longest streak in program history.

Coming into this weekend with the sixth most double plays turned in the nation, Penn State completed a pair of two-outers. The Nittany Lions have two double plays in each of the four games played this weekend.

Penn State completes its six-game homestand this week with nonconference games against Pittsburgh and Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
