University Park, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team has earned a bid to the 2009 NCAA Championships. The qualification marks the 19th bid in the last 20 years for the Nittany Lions. Penn State will compete at the No. 10 seed in regionals at the Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway New Jersey May 14-16.
"The entire team is thrilled to have earned this opportunity," said head coach Greg Nye. "It is so tough to get in the national, and to have played well down the stretch made the difference."
Coming off a 4th place finish at the Big Ten Championship the team looks to qualify for the NCAA Finals for the 2nd year in a row. In 2008 the Nittany Lions finished 25th in the nation.
The Nittany Lions will compete in a 14-team field with five individuals, not from those teams at the Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. hosted by Columbia University. The low five teams and the low individual will advance to the finals from each region.
The 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Golf committee selected the teams and individuals to complete in hope to advance to the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. The championships will be conducted May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The University of Toledo is the host institution for this year's championships.
