University Park, Pa. - Penn State men¹s golf standout Kevin Foley (Sommerville, N.J.) was among the 30 players recognized as 2009 PING All-Americans by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Monday. The rising senior was named to the third team after a successful year leading the Nittany Lions to a fourth place finish at the Big Tens and two first-place finishes in the regular season. Individually, Foley finished second in Big Ten play.
Three teams of 10 players made up the first, second and third teams with an additional 33 golfers named honorable mention. Prominent members of 24 different teams across the country were selected to the 2009 PING All-American Teams.
Named First-Team All-Big Ten, Foley has had a successful year adding first place finishes at the Lehigh Invitational and Boilermaker Invitational to his second place individual finish in the 2009 Big Ten mens golf championships. The Sommerville native also competed in his home state of New Jersey at the local U.S. Open qualifier in late May, becoming an alternate for the second consecutive year. Foley will enter his senior year with an average of 72.73, good for the best career scoring average of any Nittany Lion in the program's history. Penn State Alum Robert Rohanna currently holds the record with an average of 73.45.
"Kevin being named as a third team All American places him amongst the top thirty of all college golfers," says head coach Greg Nye. "All of us who are around him daily know how hard he works both in and out of season to put himself in position to be at the top. Kevin had a great year, and has many ahead of him."
In addition to the All-Americans announced, the GCAA has announced their selections for the PING regional teams. Three Nittany Lions make an appearance on the northeast regional team including Foley, Nick Archambault and Jim Markovitz. Archambault had an exciting premier year playing for the Nittany Lions, carding his top rounds with a fifth place finish at the Lehigh Invitational. The Quebec native posted a 27 round scoring average of 75.37. Markovitz finished in 17th at the Big Ten Championships and finished seventh at the Boilermaker Invitational, his best on the year.
