Nittany Lions Finish Eighth in Season Opener

ZIONSVILLE, IN. - The Penn State men's golf team wrapped up its first fall-season tournament today, finishing in eighth place at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate. The Lions shot a final round of 298, carding a tournament total of 292-292-298 (882).

Senior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) finished on top for Penn State throughout the tournament, ending tied for 15. Howe shot rounds of 72-70-76 (218) to finish in the top 20 of the 85-individual field. Sean Dale of North Florida secured the title with a final round of 67, to beat out University of Illinois Scott Langley by one stroke. Dale shot rounds 66-69-67 (202) to help his team finish in second place.

The University of Illinois held strong throughout the weekend to expand their first-place lead by 13 strokes. The team posted rounds of 281-282-284 (847), the best finish in Wolf Run History, to take the title. North Florida finished in second at 860 followed by Indiana University (871).

New Jersey native, Kevin Foley (Sommerville, N.J.) shot a 73 final round, to finish tied for 19. Foley carded a three-round total 71-75-73 (219). Fellow senior Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) placed 26 with rounds of 74-73-73 (221). Junior Tommy McDonagh (Wilton, Conn.) had a consistent score of 75 throughout all three rounds, finishing tied for 38 (225).

Ernesto Marin (Miami, Fl.) finished tied for 73 after being a last-minute add-on to the roster following a morning injury to Nick Archambault. Marin shot a final round 77 to cap off his premier collegiate tournament.

"Considering an injury to Archambault the morning of departure and several other team complications the guys have faced leading into this event, we managed to stay competitive against an excellent field," said head coach Greg Nye.

The golf team will jump back into competition on Sept. 29 at the VCU Shootout in Richmond, Va.
