Baseball to Open Fall Slate at Home This Weekend

Sept. 8, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State baseball team opens its fall schedule this weekend with a pair of intrasquad games, Friday (Sept. 11) at 5 p.m. and Sunday (Sept. 13) at 12:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park and are open to the public.

Despite losing a number of graduating seniors, the Nittany Lions do return a number of players, including last season's top two hitters, Jordan Steranka and Blake Lynd. Steranka hit .365 in his freshman campaign with a team-leading six home runs and 42 RBIs. Lynd wasn't far behind with a .356 average.

David Lutz and Jesse Alfreno are a pair of top returning pitchers from last season's bullpen. Lutz led the team with a 3.38 ERA in 42.2 innings while Alfreno was second with a 4.44 ERA.

Also returning is sophomore Ryan Ignas, who led Penn State in both wins and saves last season. He was one of only 10 players in Division I to lead his respective team in both categories. He was named a Third Team All-Big Ten honoree, along with Steranka.

This weekend is your first chance for a sneak peak of the 2010 Lions. Check back to GoPSUsports.com for more news and notes as the baseball team prepares for its 2010 schedule.
