Men's Swimming Downs St. Bonaventure, 144-97
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Behind a complete team effort, the Penn State women's swimming & diving team opened it season on Tuesday with a dominating 174-60 win over St. Bonaventure. The Nittany Lions won 12 of the 13 events on the day and finished 1-2-3 in five different events.
Senior captain Lindsey DeForrest (Wycombe, Pa.) led the way by winning both the 100 and 200 freestyles with times of 52.72 and 1:55.52, respectively. Fellow senior, Stephanie Roop won a pair of events as well. She took the 500 and 1,000 freestyles with times of 5:08.93 and 10:24.23.
Other seniors also chipped in wins as Kailey Morris (Baltimore, Md.) took the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.87, more than four seconds ahead of teammate Lauren Smart (2:08.77) in second. Daphne Skelos (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) finished first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:29.48.
A number of freshmen thrived in their first-collegiate action highlighted by Paige Whitmire (Lederach, Pa.), Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Merrit Krawczyk (Kingwood, Texas) all winning their respective races. Whitmire topped the 50 freestyle (24.68), barely beating Michelle Myers in second (24.88). Modglin easily won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.91 while Krawczyk was nearly six seconds ahead of second place finisher Kara Small in the 200 breaststroke.
Other freshmen fared well with Rachel Gadzicki (Pottstown, Pa.) coming in second in the 200 freestyle (1:57.13) while Ann Ragan Kearns (West Hartford, Conn.) and Samantha Jarmul (North Wales, Pa.) finished second and third in the 200 butterfly.
A team of Whitmire, Lyndsey Smith (Westminster, Md.), Myers and Kristen Rodman (Lansdale, Pa.) highlighted the relay portion of the day for Penn State, winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.74.
The afternoon kicked off with diving action and included a pair of first place finishes from junior Megan Marco (Lebanon, Pa.). Her 1m diving score was 232.25 while her 3m score was 228.75. Freshman Meg Alderman (Arlington, Va.) and junior Ilana Zeises (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) also competed for the Lions, each racking up a second and fourth place finish.
The Nittany Lions return home to host West Virginia and Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 24. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
