Snow Causes Changes for Penn State-Minnesota Parking

Oct. 16, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., - Due to the volume of snow already on the ground at University Park, combined with the forecast of potentially significant snowfall tonight, all grass lots have been closed for Saturday's Penn State-Minnesota football game. Penn State is working to partner with area businesses to have football patrons park in those lots and be shuttled to Beaver Stadium.

More information on this will be distributed and posted as community parking locations are identified Fans are encouraged to take advantage of the CATA Game Day Shuttle and Fullington's Penn State Football Express.

Parking in paved lots also will be restricted, with no tents or tailgates permitted in order to maximize the space available for parking in those lots. Those bringing RVs to the game may be directed to other locations for parking.

The grass lots are closed mainly for safety reasons. The ground was not yet frozen, and the amount of slushy snow that has fallen has turned the lots muddy There already is close to a half-foot of snow on these lots, with up to an additional half foot or so being forecast, making the lots impassable and treacherous to motor vehicle traffic.

As of 8 a.m. today, State College had officially received 4.7 inches of snow, the area's largest snowfall ever in October. The snowfall received yesterday and overnight also was the earliest recorded measurable snowfall in State College (previous was Oct. 17, 1977).

More information about the situation will be posted throughout the day, so those planning to come to the University Park campus for Homecoming activities and the football game should check www.GoPSUsports.com for the latest information.

Penn State's 90th Homecoming game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. in Beaver Stadium. Paved parking lots are scheduled to open at 8:00 a.m. and stadium public gates will open at 2:00 p.m. The game will air on ABC (ESPN outside the ABC coverage area), the Penn State Sports Network and GoPSUsports.com.
