IOWA CITY, Iowa - Freshman forward Kelsey Amy had a flurry of chances with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, but she couldn't score the equalizer as the Penn State field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Iowa on Sunday afternoon. The game was broadcast by the Big Ten Network via tape delay and will debut this Monday evening (Oct. 19) at 8 p.m. ET.
Amy finished with a game-high seven shots, including five in a span of 1:33 late in the second half. She wasn't able to convert as three of her shots were saved with another two off the mark.
Penn State came out strong with the first two shots of the contest, including one from Amy, who was looking for her second goal in as many games and fourth in the last five contests.
The Hawkeyes turned the tides in their favor and converted on what proved to be the game's only goal when Tricia Dean made a crossing pass to Geena Lesiak, who made the redirection past Penn State junior goalkeeper Ali Meves at 22:35.
The Nittany Lions hung tough the rest of the way, but couldn't tie the score in dropping their second straight decision at Iowa. They fall to 3-11 all-time at one of the nation's toughest places to play.
Final shots were 12-10 in favor of the Hawkeyes while Meves made five saves, four coming in the first half. McGraw's three saves all came in the Lions' late charge. Penn State had seven corners to Iowa's six.
The Nittany Lions are back in action on Friday as they travel to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers. After a neutral site game against Pacific, they return home for their final regular season contest on Oct. 31 at 12 p.m. vs. No. 8 Michigan State.
