UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team scored a combined 558 (287-27) in the opening rounds of the Renaissance Invitational Sunday, putting the team in third place at 18-under par. Campbell leads the 12-team Invitational at 26-under par after rounds of 271-279 (550). Indiana trails by a stroke at 25-under par with rounds of 280-271 (551). Senior Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) is the leading individual for the Nittany Lions in seventh with a 7-under 137 (71-66). Freshman Ernie Marin (Miami, Fla.) is eighth, one stroke behind Foley with a 6-under par 138 (69-69).

After completing the first round with a 287, which was seventh in the field, the Nittany Lions rallied to card a 271 in the second round. Penn State's second round total of 271 tied Campbell's first round score and Indiana's second round tally for the top rounds of the Invitational by any team thus far. The 16-stroke improvement shot the Nittany Lions to third place by the time the opening day of play concluded.

Marin led the Nittany Lions in the first round, carding a 3-under par 69, which put him in a tie for eighth. Foley and junior Tommy McDonaugh (Wilton, Conn.) both carded a 1-under par 71 in the Invitational's opening round, which was tied for 18. After Round One, freshman Matthew Porter (Cortland, N.Y.) was 51st with a four-over 76, while senior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) was 64th with an 11-over par 83.

Foley improved his play by five strokes in Round Two to end the day in seventh with a 7-under 137 (71-66). Marin remained steady for the Nittany Lions, carding another 69 on the second 18, and trails Foley by a stroke heading into the last day of play. Marin is currently eighth at a 6-under par 138. McDonagh finished the day tied for 22nd after a second-round 72 left him at 1-under par with a 143 (71-72). Porter improved his play by eight strokes in the second round, carding a 68 for a total of 144 (76-68) and tying him for 28th after Round Two at even par. After struggling in the first round of play, Howe came back strong with a 68 in the second round for a 151 on the day (83-68), which is tied for 50th at seven-over par.

Action at the Renaissance Invitational continues Monday, Nov. 2, with the final 18 holes. The Renaissance Invitational will conclude fall play for the Nittany Lions.
