Women's Volleyball Signs Five to 2010 Recruiting Class

Nov. 18, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's volleyball coach Russ Rose announced today that he has signed five players to the 2010 recruiting class. Signees include Katie Slay, Deja McClendon, Madison Martin, Mikinzie Moydell and Ariel Scott.

"We have a great class coming in," said coach Rose. "Both the players that have signed letters of intent and those who have to decided to walk on, many of which have turned down scholarships to attend Penn State."

Slay, a 6-6 middle blocker, hails from Raleigh, N.C. and played for the same club team as current Nittany Lions Megan Hodge and Katie Kabbes.

"Katie is a great natural blocker," said Rose. "She has the potential to become a strong front row player for us."

McClendon is a 6-0 outside hitter from DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, Ky.

"Deja was recently recognized as Kentucky's Miss Volleyball," said Rose. "She's an explosive outside hitter with the physical tools to become a dominant outside attacker."

Martin, a 6-2 outside hitter, is from Tampa, Fla. and is currently helping her high school team chase its fourth straight state championship.

"Maddie is a great all-around player with the ability to help us at either front row outside positions, as well as being a primary passer in the back row," said Rose.

Moydell is a 6-1 setter who will join the Nittany Lions from Parker, Colo.

"We thought Mikinizie was the top setter prospect in the class," said Rose. "We feel that there will be a transition, but once she gets up used to the speed of the college game she could be a great college setter."

Last, but not least, Scott is a 6-5 outside hitter-middle blocker hailing from Newark, N.J.

"Ariel is a player we're looking to see fit into any front row positions," said Rose. "She is a dominant attacker with a high contact point."

"The 2010 class meets a lot of our needs," explained Rose. "We needed depth and size at our front row positions with the graduation of seniors Kelsey Ream, Alisha Glass and Hodge."
