UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher (Seymour, Conn.) and freshman midfielder Christine Nairn (Bowie, Md.) were tabbed a U.S. Senior National Team training camp in December. Head coach Pia Sundhage called 18 WPS players and six collegiate student-athletes into action for a 10-day camp starting Dec. 5.
Naeher received her first call-up to the senior team, concluding her career in Happy Valley as one of the finest goalkeepers in Penn State history. The senior out of Connecticut finished with 60 wins in nearly 8,000 minutes of action in net, while compiling 30 solo shutouts and 359 saves, ranking second all-time in PSU history in all those categories.
Nairn, who has already been capped twice by the senior squad as well as scoring her first goal in July, was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year last week. Nairn recorded seven goals and 10 assists on the season, leading the team in helpers in 2009. Her 10 assists are third best for a freshman in Penn State history behind all-time greats Christie Welsh and Stephanie Smith.
The two Penn State teammates were playing partners on last year's U-20 FIFA World Cup winning team in Chile, both as starting members. Naeher won the Gold Glove, presented to the best goalkeeper of the tournament, as the U.S. defeated North Korea, 2-1, in the final.
The 11-day camp will run from Dec. 5-15 in Carson, Calif. at the Home Depot Center for the 24-player roster. This will be the last action of the year for the women's squad until 2010.
