Freshmen Shine as Women's Swimming Remains in Fourth at Ohio State Invitational

Dec. 5, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Led by strong performances from freshmen Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Paige Whitmire (Lederach, Pa.), the Penn State women's swimming team posted a stellar effort on Saturday to remain in fourth place at the Ohio State Invitational. Modglin swam to the top time in the 400 IM prelims to advance to the evening's finals where she finished fourth while Whitmire had a fourth-place finish of her own, in the 100 backstroke. The Nittany Lions racked up 177 points on the day to reach 296 with one day still remaining.

Modglin started the morning strong with her second "NCAA B" time in the preliminaries of the 400 IM. Her final time of 4:17.94 was a career-best, topping her previous mark of 4:18.23. That time is also good for eighth in program history, replacing the mark set on Nov. 21 against Virginia. She followed the strong performance with a fourth-place finish in the evening's finals (4:19.57), the first of her two top-six finishes, the other in the 100 backstroke.

Whitmire stole the show in the 100 backstroke, finishing fourth with a time of 56.38 while Modglin wasn't far behind in sixth (56.63). An incredible seven Nittany Lions advanced to the finals of that event (two in A, two in B and three in C), the most for Penn State in any event. Senior Michelle Myers (Boalsburg, Pa.) and sophomore Samantha Palser (Chester Springs, Pa.) placed 13th and 14th, respectively while sophomore Kristen Rodman (Lansdale, Pa.), senior Daphne Skelos (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and junior Lauren Smart (Langehorne, Pa.) reached the C Finals.

Penn State also excelled in freestyles as a team of Modglin, sophomore Erin Thomas (Bangor, Maine) and seniors Lindsey DeForrest (Wycombe, Pa.) and Stephanie Roop (Dowingtown, Pa.) finished fifth in the 800 freestyle (7:28.51) while Whitmire, freshman Merritt Krawczyk (Kingwood, Texas), Myers and DeForrest placed sixth in the 200 medley (1:45.74).
