UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - After taking the week off for final exams, the Penn State Lady Lions (7-3, 0-1) return to the hardwood to face Oakland (2-8, 0-1 Summit) at the Jordan Center on Monday at 7:30 p.m., as part of a men's and women's doubleheader. The Nittany Lion men's basketball team will take on American at 5 p.m. All tickets to the doubleheader are general admission and are $10 for adults and $5 for youth.
HOOPS TWINBILL: Monday's game will be a true doubleheader for the Penn State basketball programs. The Nittany Lions will take on American at 5 p.m., followed by the Lady Lion game against Oakland. Tickets to the game are general admission and are $10 for adults and $5 for youth/students.
TV/WEB/RADIO: The game will be streamed live on BigTenNetwork.com for $2.99. The contest will also be tape-delayed on the Big Ten Network as a "Student U" broadcast on Tues., Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. The game is on the Penn State Sports Network with Jerry Fisher and Ben Youngerman calling the action. SCOUTING OAKLAND: The Golden Grizzlies are 2-8 on the season. Melissa Jeltema had a double-double in Oakland's loss at Illinois Saturday. She leads the team in scoring (14.5) and rebounding (7.8). Bethany Watterworth is second on the team in scoring with a 13.3 average. She is also second on the team in rebounding (7.0). Hanna Reising accounts for 9.5 points per game.
ALL-TIME VS. THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES: This is the first meeting between the Lady Lions and Golden Grizzlies. Penn State is 1-0 all-time against current members of the Summit League. The only other time the Lady Lions met a Summit League squad was at the Northern Lights Invitational in Alaska when Penn State topped UMKC 83-62 on Mar. 1, 1992.
LAST TIME OUT: With the 2000 Final Four team and a large gathering of Lady Lion alumni in the crowd, Penn State used a pair of outstanding senior performances and clutch freshmen free throw shooting to shock the 15th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers (8-1), 77-73, at the Bryce Jordan Center Dec. 12. Senior Tyra Grant had a season-high 27 points to go along with three steals to pace the Lady Lions, who defeated a ranked opponent for the first time since topping No. 10 Duke on Dec. 2, 2007. Freshman Nikki Greene scored all 12 of her points in the second half and pulled in seven rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass.
LIONS TOP RANKED PANTHERS: The Lady Lions earned a 77-73 victory over the 15th-ranked Pitt Panthers on Dec. 12, giving Penn State its first win over a ranked for since topping #11/10 Duke on Dec. 2, 2007.
GREENE SOLID IN THE CLUTCH: Freshman center Nikki Greene was solid down the stretch for the Lady Lions draining 5-of-6 free throw attempts in the final 1:04 to seal the upset win over #15 Pittsburgh on Dec. 12. Greene, who entered the game as a 43% free throw shooter, was 8-for-11 from the charity stripe in the game. She finished the game with 12 points, all of which came in the second half, and seven rebounds.
MER'S MERRY IN STARTING ROLE: Meredith Monroe has quickly settled into her newly-found starting role. After scoring a career-high 11 points against Monmouth on Dec. 9, the senior registered her first collegiate double-double with career highs of 14 points and 13 rebounds, including eight caroms on the offensive glass in the upset win over Pitt on Dec. 12. Monroe was 5-for-8 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line against the Panthers. In three starts this season, Monroe is averaging 9.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.
GRANT INTO EIGHTH PLACE: With a season-high 27 points in the win over #15 Pittsburgh on Dec. 12, senior Tyra Grant moved into eighth place on Penn State's all-time scoring chart, passing Andrea Garner (1,619). Grant has 1,626 points in her four seasons in Happy Valley. She needs 37 points to pass Lisa Shepherd (1,663) for seventh place.
MONROE DOUBLES UP: Senior forward Meredith Monroe continued to shine in her newly found starting role as she posted her first career double-double with career bests of 14 points and 13 rebounds in the upset win over #15 Pittsburgh on Dec. 12. It was the second consecutive game that Monroe set a career scoring mark. Monroe was 5-for-8 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line versus the Panthers.
After taking a break for the holidays, the Lady Lions close out their four-game homestand with their Big Ten home opener against Iowa on Mon., Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. It is "Take a Kid to the Game" night with the offering of a free youth ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket. Following the Iowa game, the Lady Lions will head to Illinois (Dec. 31) and Northwestern (Jan. 3). Single-game tickets can be purchased by calling the Penn State ticket office at 814-865-5555.
The 2010 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State will take place on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m., as the Lady Lions take on Illinois in the Bryce Jordan Center. The game can be seen on www.bigtennetwork.com. The first three Pink Zone events have raised more than $80,000 for breast cancer awareness. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
