Women's Swimming in Fourth After Day One of Ohio State Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Highlighted by strong performances in the 50 freestyle, the Penn State women's swimming team finished Friday's action at the Ohio State Invitational in fourth place. The Nittany Lions racked up 119 points, ahead of Miami and Pittsburgh in hopes of catching first-place Minnesota. Seniors Lindsey DeForrest (Wycombe, Pa.) and Michelle Myers (Boalsburg, Pa.) along with freshman Paige Whitmire (Lederach, Pa.) all impressed in the 50 free morning preliminaries to reach the A Finals where they placed sixth through eighth, respectively.

Leading the way are the Golden Gophers with 365 points followed by Ohio State with 203 and West Virginia with 153.5. Penn State isn't far behind with its 119 points, good for fourth. The diving squad was in action as well, but did not score.

Myers finished the 50 freestyle in sixth with a finals time of 23.50, followed by Whitmire in seventh (23.65) and DeForrest in eighth (23.66). Junior Kristen Rodman (Lansdale, Pa.) and sophomore Erin Thomas (Bangor, Maine) also reached the B and C Finals, where they swam to times of 23.98 and 24.15.

Another strong event for the Nittany Lions was the 500 freestyle which saw four qualify for the finals. Senior Stephanie Roop posted the best time, finishing 13th (4:54.51) while freshman Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) was two behind in 15th (4:56.24). Senior Kailey Morris (Baltimore, Md.) also placed 18th after finishing nearly three seconds faster than her morning prelims (4:54.90). Junior Diana Greco (Chester Springs, Pa.) rounded out the finishers, in 20th (4:59.34).

The final individual event of the day was the 200 IM which saw three Nittany Lions reach the B Finals. Relays were highlighted by a seventh-place finish in the 400 medley (3:50.20) by Modglin, Smith, Myers and DeForrest.
