The Penn State Lady Lions (5-3, 0-1) look to get back to their winning ways and open a four-game homestand when they host Monmouth (3-4) Wednesday night at 7 p.m., at the Bryce Jordan Center. The game will be streamed live on BigTenNetwork.com for $2.99. The game will also air on the Big Ten Network on a tape-delayed basis on Thurs., Dec. 10 at 11 a.m.
TICKET PROMOTIONS: Wednesday night is Operation Warm night for the Lady Lions. Any fan that donates a new piece of winter clothing (coat, sweater, socks, gloves or hat) will receive a free youth ticket or $5 adult ticket.
TV/RADIO: The game will be streamed live on BigTenNetwork.com and will also be tape-delayed on Big Ten Network where it will air on Thurs., Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. The game is on the Penn State Sports Network with Jerry Fisher and Kellie Goodman calling the action. LAST TIME OUT: Despite 23 points from Tyra Grant, the Penn State Lady Lions dropped a 56-48 decision to Minnesota in the Big Ten openers for both teams. The Golden Gophers made more free throws (23) than the Lady Lions had field goals made (18). Minnesota also shot a sizzling 88.5% (23-26) from the charity stripe. Grant also accounted for four rebounds and steals. Freshman Alex Bentley also reached double figures for the Lady Lions with 15 points to go along with two assists and four steals, while fellow freshman Nikki Greene had three blocked shots and four rebounds.
SCOUTING MONMOUTH: The Hawks are 3-4 on the season and have won two of their last three games. Alysha Womack leads Monmouth with a 10.7 scoring average to go along with 2.9 rebound and 2.0 assists per game. Erin Rooney is second on the team in scoring at an 8.6 clip, while Abby Martin tops the team in rebounding (7.7) and is third in points (7.7).
ALL-TIME VS. THE HAWKS: The Lady Lions were victorious in the only meeting between these two teams with a 97-57 win over the Hawks on Nov. 27, 1982. Penn State is 8-1 all-time against teams from the Northeast Conference.
ALEX ALL ABOUT SCORING: After being held scoreless in her collegiate debut at Drexel on Nov. 13, freshman Alex Bentley has turned in double-digit scoring performances in six of her last seven games. With the exception of the Drexel game, Bentley has scored nine points or more in every game this season. Bentley is second on the team in scoring at a 10.5 per game mark.
TY'S 20s: Senior guard Tyra Grant turned in her third 20-point game of the season with 23 tallies in the loss at Minnesota on Dec. 6. She has 29 career games with 20 or more points.
WASHINGTON INDUCTED INTO FLINT HALL OF FAME: Lady Lion head coach Coquese Washington was inducted into the Greater Flint (Mich.) Area Sports Hall of Fame on Sat., Dec. 5 at the Genesys Banquet Center. Washington will be enshrined for her standout basketball career that began at Flint's Central High School. She was a two-time All-State selection at Central and led the Indians to two Saginaw Valley Championships. Among the other individual inductees are former Detroit Tigers pitcher Scott Aldred, John Biedenbach (baseball), Kelly Hebler (basketball), Roy Hall (wrestling), Don Batchelor (Grand Blanc coach and athletics director).
The Lady Lions host Big East rival Pittsburgh on Sat., Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. Penn State will be honoring the 10th anniversary of the 2000 Final Four team at the Pitt game and several members of that team are expected to be in attendance. The Lady Lions continue their four-game homestand against Oakland (Mon., Dec. 21) and Iowa (Mon., Dec. 28). The 2010 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State will take place on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m., as the Lady Lions take on Illinois in the Bryce Jordan Center. The game can be seen on www.bigtennetwork.com. The first three Pink Zone events have raised more than $80,000 for breast cancer awareness. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
