Greaves' Speedy Saturday Leads to Big Ten Athlete of the Week Honors

Jan. 11, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.: January 11, 2010 - After opening her 2010 campaign with a pair of NCAA-leading marks, Nittany Lion junior Shavon GReaves (Lakewood, N.J.) has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Week, announced by conference offices on Monday. Greaves came out blazing out of the blocks at the Penn State Relays last Saturday, posting personal bests and meet records in two events to highlight a stellar overall performance from the 10th-ranked Nittany Lion women's team.

Greaves made a statement on both the Big Ten and NCAA sprint scene, posting the top performances in the conference and in the NCAA in the 60- and 200-meters. Greaves was on fire all afternoon, coming out with an NCAA-provisional qualifying 7.33 in the 60-meter preliminaries, and following up with an impressive 7.30 in the event final - good for her first victory of the 2010 season.

The junior wasn't finished, however, sprinting to a speedy personal-best 23.22 in the 200, which was also good for first place and another NCAA-qualifying effort. Greaves is also swiftly solidifying her spot in Penn State history, as her performances in both events on Saturday are ranked second-to-only 11-time All-American Connie Moore in the Penn State record books.

Greaves was joined by teammates Doris Anyanwu (Beltsville, Md.), Caitlin Defusco (Schwenksville, Pa.), and Fawn Dorr (Akron, N.Y.) on the winning 4x400-meter relay, which finished in 3:41.70 - just off the NCAA-qualifying mark of 3:40.00.

The Nittany Lions are back in action this weekend at the Penn State Northeast Challenge, set for Saturday, January 16, at Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
