UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Penn State Lady Lions (10-4, 3-2) will be looking for the season sweep of Iowa (8-8, 1-4) and for their first win in Carver-Hawkeye Arena since 2005 when the Lady Lions take on the Hawkeyes Thursday at 8 p.m. (Eastern). The game will be streamed live on BigTenNetwork.com for $2.99 and will re-air on the Big Ten Network Friday at 9 a.m.
RADIO/WEB: The game is on the Penn State Sports Network with Jerry Fisher and Ben Youngerman calling the action. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450. The audio feed is available at www.GoPSUsports.com. The contest will also be available on BigTenNetwork.com via a live video stream for $2.99. The "Student U" broadcast will re-air on the Big Ten Network on Friday at 9 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Lady Lions let an 11-point second-half lead slip away, but hit on 10-of-12 free throws in overtime to earn a 77-71 win over Indiana Sunday. All 10 players that entered the game for Penn State scored, led by Tyra Grant with a game-high 27 points. Grant passed Angie Potthoff (1,725) on PSU's all-time scoring list with 1,739. Junior Julia Trogele posted her second double-double of the season and the fourth of her career with a personal-best 18 points and 11 rebounds. Nikki Greene also had a solid performance with 11 rebounds and a career-best five blocks in 19 minutes.
SCOUTING IOWA: The Hawkeyes have dropped their last two games to fall to 8-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Kamille Wahlin paces three Hawkeyes averaging double figures with a 1.53 scoring average. Kachine Alexander has rounded back into form after missing seven games due to injury. She accounts for 15.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Freshman Jaime Printy is also averaging double-digits at a 13.9 per game clip.
ALL-TIME VS. HAWKEYES: The Lady Lions are 20-16 all-time against Iowa, but are just 5-11 all-time in Iowa City. Penn State hasn't won at Carver-Hawkeye Arena since 2005, a string of three games. The Lady Lions snapped a five-game losing streak to Iowa with a 77-73 overtime win at the Jordan Center on Dec. 28. Last time these teams met in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes were victorious in a 97-89 triple overtime thriller in Iowa City on Feb. 1, 2009.
LAST TIME VS. IOWA: Senior Tyra Grant scored 11 of her game-high 28 points in overtime to lead Penn State to a thrilling 77-73 victory over Iowa Monday. The win snaps Penn State's five-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes. Grant was 13-for-14 from the free throw line on the way to the 32nd 20-point performance of her career. She also accounted for six rebounds and three steals. Junior Janessa Wolff was solid in relief for the Lady Lions with 10 points, eight rebounds and a blocked shot in 18 minutes, while freshman Alex Bentley added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
LADY LIONS VS. MICHIGAN MOVED: The game time for the Penn State vs. Michigan game at the Bryce Jordan Center on Thursday, Feb. 18 has been moved to 6:30 p.m. to accommodate a live broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
JT DOUBLES UP: Junior Julia Trogele posted her second double-double of the season and the fourth of her career with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Indiana on Jan. 10. Trogele's 18 points are a personal best, surpassing her previous high of 15 set twice before. The swing player was 14-for-15 from the free throw line against the Hoosiers, both of which were career marks.
EXTRA TIME: For the second time in two Big Ten home games, the Lady Lions had to play an extra five minutes to secure the win in the Jan. 10 victory over Indiana. The 77-71 win over the Hoosiers and the 77-73 victory over Iowa on Dec. 28 give the Lions two overtime wins in a season for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign.
REJECTING THE COMPETITION: The Lady Lions blocked 10 shots against Indiana on Jan. 10, led by a five-rejection performance by rookie Nikki Greene. The 10 blocks are the most by a Penn State team since the Lady Lions blocked 11 shots against Ohio State on Jan. 11, 2007. Greene's career-high five blocks were the most by a Penn State player since Janessa Wolff rejected six shots against Bucknell on Dec. 9, 2008.
SCOURING THE BOARDS: The Lady Lions had three players grab 10 or more rebounds against Indiana on Jan. 10. Julia Trogele (11 rebs.), Nikki Greene (11) and Meredith Monroe (10) each pulled down double-digit rebounds against the Hoosiers, a feat that has not been accomplished in at least the last 10 years. Penn State's 55 caroms tie its season-high.
GRANT INTO SIXTH PLACE: Tyra Grant continued to move up the Penn State scoring chart with a 27-point effort against Indiana on Jan. 10. The effort moved Grant past Angie Potthoff (1,725) and into sixth place on the Lady Lion career scoring chart. Grant has 1,739 points in her four seasons in Happy Valley. She needs 158 points to pass Suzie McConnell (1,897) for fifth place.
The Lady Lions return to the Bryce Jordan Center on Sunday, Jan. 17 to face Michigan State at 1 p.m. on Autograph Day. The Subway Full Court Four-Pack is available for the Michigan State game. The 2010 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State will take place on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m., as the Lady Lions take on Illinois in the Bryce Jordan Center. The game can be seen on www.bigtennetwork.com. The first three Pink Zone events have raised more than $80,000 for breast cancer awareness. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
