PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Penn State women's swimming and diving team leads Maryland (90-77) and Villanova (129-38) while trailing Pittsburgh (86-81) after Friday's action at the Pittsburgh quad meet. The day was highlighted by sensational efforts in the 400 IM which saw the Nittany Lions take first, second and third place.

Freshman Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the way in the 400 IM with an "NCAA B" time of 4:18.14. She was followed by seniors Lyndsey Smith (Westminster, Md.)and Kailey Morris (Baltimore, Md.) with times of 4:21.38 and 4:24.46, respectively. Yet another senior, Daphne Skelos (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), posted a strong sixth-place finish (4:27.58) as well.

Modglin's win was one of three Nittany Lion victories on the day. The others came from senior Stephanie Roop (Dowingtown, Pa.) in the 1650 freestyle (16:45.22) and the team of senior Michelle Myers (Boalsburg, Pa.), freshman Paige Whitmire (Lederach, Pa.) and sophomores Samantha Palser (Chester Springs, Pa.) and Katie Pulos (Rosemont, Pa.) in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.39).

Three second-place finishes came from Palser in the 100 freestyle (51.93), freshman Merritt Krawczyk (Kingwood, Texas) in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.62) along with Whitmire, Krawczyk, Myers and Palser in the 200 medley relay (1:45.21).

Penn State placed fifth through eighth in the one-meter in diving action, led by Ilana Zeises's (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) score of 228.85.

The Nittany Lions conclude the quad meet on Saturday at 9 a.m.
