UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's volleyball coach Russ Rose is to be inducted into The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. The induction ceremony will take place on April 18, 2010 at the Suffolk Y JCC in Commack, N.Y., the home of The Hall of Fame.
"We are thrilled to be honoring Coach Russ Rose of Penn State," said Hall of Fame Chariman Lynne Kramer. "He represents the best in college sports."
The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is dedicated to honoring Jewish athletes, coaches, broadcasters and others who have distinguished themselves in the world of sports. A few of the other inductees this year include, Olympic swimmer Jason Lezak, Virginia Tech basketball coach Seth Greenberg and professional football player and wrestler Bill Goldberg.
In 2009, Rose guided the Nittany Lion women's volleyball team to an unprecedented third straight NCAA National Championship and the program's fourth overall. Penn State is currently riding a record-breaking 102-match winning streak and has not lost a match since Sept. 15, 2007. While at the NCAA National Semifinals, Rose earned his 1,000th career victory with a 3-1 win against Hawaii to advance to the National Championship match. He is one of just three coaches in women's volleyball to have reached the milestone. He heads into his 32nd season at the helm of the Penn State program with 1,001 career wins, earning all of them with the Nittany Lions.
Rose, 2007 inductee into the AVCA Hall of Fame, owns a career record of 1,001-159 for a .863 winning percentage to be the winningest active Division I volleyball coach. After guiding the Nittany Lions to their 13th overall and seventh consecutive Big Ten Championship in 2009, Rose garnered his 11th Big Ten Coach of the Year award. Other notes on Rose include, coaching PSU to 29 NCAA Tournament appearances, coaching 19 conference players of the year in the last 24 years and having at least one AVCA All-American in 30 of his 31 seasons.
