ATHENS, Ga. - The Penn State women's diving team concluded the two-day Georgia Invitational on Monday with strong showings in the preliminaries. The meet, structured much like the NCAA Championships, saw the top divers advance to the evening's Bulldog Shoot-Out. Junior Megan Marco (Lebanon, Pa.) was strong with a 21st place finish in the one-meter and 27th in the three-meter.
"The kids did a good job and really competed well against some of the nation's best divers," said coach Craig Brown. "It was their best dives of the year."
The field included some of the nation's best teams from SEC powers Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee along with Clemson, Drexel, East Carolina, Florida, Iowa State, LSU, Navy, North Carolina, Rider, SMU, Tennessee and Virginia.
Action kicked off on Sunday with the women's one-meter. Marco was first to place for the Nittany Lions, coming in 21st with a score of 224.45. She was followed by junior Ilana Zeises (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) in 30th (205.15), sophomore Meg Alderman (Arlington, Va.) in 31st (201.55), freshman Katie O'Connell (Andover, Mass.) in 34th (194.30) and freshman Chelsea Adlam (Ambler, Pa.) in 41st (165.45).
Teammates Alderman and Zeises tied for the Penn State best in Monday's three-meter, finishing 24th with a score of 220.30. They were followed by O'Connell and Marco with scores of 219.70 and 212.20, respectively. Adlam wasn't far behind, in 31st (203.15).
The swimming team returns to action on Thursday at Florida State.
