Williams Paces Effort for Track and Field at Last Chance Competitions

SOUTH BEND, Ind./BLACKSBURG, Va.. - Junior Lionel Williams (Staten Island, N.Y.) highlighted the Nittany Lion effort on Saturday, clocking a career-best performance in the 800-meters, as the Penn State contingent took on competition at Last Chance Weekend, at the Alex Wilson Invitational, and the Last Chance Qualifier at Virginia Tech.

Williams' posted a personal-best 1:48.53 for the half mile, placing sixth in the event at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame. Williams' mark is currently rated 15th on the NCAA descending order list. Qualifiers to the NCAA Indoor Championships will be announced on Monday evening.

Also competing at Notre Dame was sophomore Vince McNally (Smoketown, Pa.), who finished 12th in the 3,000-meters in 8:23.14. Classmate Caitlin Lane (Greenwich, N.Y.) would also line up in South Bend, turning in an 11th-place effort in the mile run in 4:49.56.

Meanwhile at Virginia Tech, junior Blake Eaton (Allegeny, N.Y.) placed third in the shot put at 58-8 (17.88), and Caitlin Fairbairn (Coatesville, Pa.) posted an eighth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 12-7.50 (3.85).

The Nittany Lions will continue their indoor campaign at the NCAA Indoor Championships, set for March 11-12, at Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
