Men's Tennis Match at Coastal Carolina Moved to Tuesday

March 8, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 42nd-ranked Penn State men's tennis team's match at Coastal Carolina that was originally scheduled for Thursday March 11 has been moved to Tuesday March 9 due to inclement weather. The Nittany Lions will face the Chanticleers at 3 p.m. at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

Last Time Out: The Nittany Lions (10-1, 1-0) opened Big Ten play on Sunday with a 6-1 victory over the No. 65 Purdue Boilermakers. Penn State won its eighth consecutive match. Two of those victories during the win streak have come against ranked opponents. Junior Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia), senior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.), freshman Warren Hardie (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), freshman Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) and senior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) all posted victories in singles competition.

Scouting Coastal Carolina: The Chanticleers head into Tuesday's match with an 8-2 record and a perfect 3-0 mark in Big South Conference play. Coastal Carolina is led by Matt Gordon, who has played primarily in the No. 1 spot this spring. Gordon holds a 7-3 overall record, with a 5-3 clip when playing in the No. 1 bout. Alex Funkhouser is a perfect 9-0 this spring in singles, playing in the No. 4 and 5 spots.

All-Time vs. the Chanticleers: This will be the first ever matchup between Penn State and Coastal Carolina. The Nittany Lions have only played one Big South opponent in Presbyterian, who holds a 3-0 all-time series edge on Penn State.

What's Next: The Nittany Lions will travel to Montgomery, Ala. March 18-21 for the Blue-Gray Tournament, featuring some of the top teams in the country. Last season, Penn State picked up a victory over a ranked Virginia Commonwealth team at the Blue-Gray. Following the tournament, the Nittany Lions will head to Columbus, Ohio on March 28 to take on the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes.
