University Park, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team created a 7-stroke cushion to complete the first round atop the leaderboard at the 34th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate golf tournament. The Nittany Lions fired a 291 opening round to place ahead of second-place team Ohio University, 298.
Senior Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) and junior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.) join Tim Gusweiler of Ohio University for the first-place individual position. The trio each shot a first round 1-under-par, 70, to secure the lead after the premier 18 holes.
Due to darkness, the second round was suspended at 7:21 p.m. and will be completed at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.
With the completion of the first round senior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) sat tied for 11 with a 3-over-par, 74. Senior Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) entered the second round tied for 31 with a 6-over-par, 77. Freshman Ernesto Marin (Miami, Fla.) rounded out the team score, shooting a 9-over-par, 80.
Nittany Lion individuals, whose scores will not be included in the team-total, included freshman Matthew Porter who sits tied for fifth with a 1-over-par, 72. Junior Brendan Borst (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied a 6-over-par, 77, joining Markovitz tied for 31. Sophomore John Burke (Bay Village, Ohio) carded a 7-over-par, 78, entering the second round tied at 42. Sophomores Tanner Smith (Sea Island, Ga.) and Nick Archambault (Q.C. Canada) rounded out the Nittany Lion individuals. Smith entered the second round tied for 60 with an 80 first-round total. Archambault entered the second round at 11-over-par with an 82.
With the conclusion of the second round tomorrow morning there will be an hour break to re-pair the participants. Following the re-pairing, groups will proceed with the third round at roughly 10:00 a.m. in a shotgun format.
