University Park, Pa. -

The Penn State men's golf team prepares for post-season play as they head to Maple Plain, Minn., for the 2010 Big Ten Championships. Friday marks the beginning of the conference clash among the 11-team field at the Windsong Farm Country Club. The three-day, 72-hole tournament will run from Friday, April 30 through Sunday, May 2 with a practice round scheduled for Thursday, April 29.

The Nittany Lions enter the tournament fired-up after a first-place finish at the 34th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate last weekend. Joining Penn State, most recently ranked at No. 61 by Golfweek, are seven other teams ranked among the top 100 programs in the nation: Illinois (9), Michigan (46), Iowa (54), Northwestern (55), Indiana (66), Purdue (78) and Ohio State (83). Other teams include Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan State.

"We have been competing at a higher level through the spring compared to last fall," said head coach Greg Nye. "We have the significant injuries to our starters behind us now. We are excited to go to Minnesota and compete as well as we possibly can. This group is very capable of some exciting results."

Senior Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) looks to defend his dominating play from last year's championship as he finished second, the best Big Ten finish in Penn State golf history. Joining the New Jersey native is senior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.), senior Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.), junior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.), and freshman Ernesto Marin. (Miami, Fla.).

Foley is ranked No. 39 in the nation, joined by No. 24 Scott Langley of Illinois as the only two participants individually ranked in the top-50. Foley enters the championship following back-to-back individual tournament titles, earning his fifth and sixth first-place finishes at the Kepler Invitational and the Rutherford Intercollegiate. Foley's medalist honors at the Rutherford marked his sixth Nittany Lion career individual title, good for most individual titles by a Penn State golfer, passing the five titles of former Lions Robert Rohanna and Dirk Ayers.

Penn State hosted the 2009 Big Ten men's golf championships at the Blue Course last year, where Illinois took the title. Penn State earned a bid to the 2009 NCAA Regionals tracking their fourth-place finish at Big Tens. The qualification marked the 19th bid in the last 20 years for the Nittany Lions. Penn State competed at the No. 10 seed in regionals at the Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J.

The 2010 Big Ten Championship will be aired on The Big Ten Network at noon ET on Sunday, May 23.
