UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State senior pitcher David Lutz (West Chester, Pa.) was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America® Third Team, as announced by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) on Tuesday. Lutz becomes the second Nittany Lion pitcher in as many years to crack the Academic All-America® squad, following Paul Cianciolo, who was named to the second team in 2009.
In his first year of graduate school, Lutz marks Penn State's ninth Academic All-American® in program history. He currently owns a 3.84 GPA in the Master of Health Administration Program after earning his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, where he accumulated a 3.67 undergraduate GPA.
Lutz becomes the sixth Penn State student-athlete to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® honors in 2009-10. Five Nittany Lion student-athletes earned first team Academic All-America® accolades during the fall semester. Senior Megan Hodge, the 2009 Honda Award winner as the nation's most outstanding women's volleyball player, was selected the Academic All-American® of the Year in her sport. Senior men's soccer standout Jason Yeisley won the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and was a first team Academic All-American®. Football student-athletes Josh Hull, Andrew Pitz and Stefen Wisniewski also gained first team Academic All-America® honors last fall, with Hull and Pitz earning first team honors for the second consecutive year.
Lutz is Penn State's 156th Academic All-American® all-time, the nation's third-highest total. Penn State has had 108 Academic All-Americans® since Tim Curley became Director of Athletics in December, 1993, a total higher than any Big Ten institution has all-time since the Academic All-America® program's inception in 1952.
Also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Lutz is one of only two Big Ten players named an Academic All-American. The other is Brandon Eckerle of Michigan State, who was also named to the third team.
Lutz was a key reliever out of the bullpen in 2010, finishing the season with a team-best 3.04 ERA in a team-leading 71 innings. His ERA was second in the Big Ten among those with enough innings to qualify. He also led the conference in appearances (36), shattering the school record in single-season and career appearances (with 85) in the process.
The durable lefty turned it up down the stretch, posting a stellar 1.71 ERA over his final 42 innings spanning his final 17 appearances. His best stretch came against Michigan State when he went 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in two games against the Spartans. That included his first-career start, a complete game masterpiece in a 9-1 victory. He was later honored for his efforts by being named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week and CollegeBaseballInsider.com Central Pitcher of the Week.
