Complete Penn State Release | List of Penn State Honorees
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Seven from Penn State women's swimming & diving have been named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for the 2009-10 academic year, as announced by the conference office on Thursday. They are among 484 total honorees and 57 from Penn State.
Receiving the distinction were Lindsey DeForrest (Wycombe, Pa.), Erin Luley (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), Kristen McKnight (Gibsonia, Pa.), Katie Pulos (Rosemont, Pa.), Rose Snyder (Harmony, Pa.), Erin Thomas (Bangor, Maine) and Emily Wolfarth (Cranberry, Pa.). Luley is a second-time winner after being among last year's inaugural recipients. Snyder is also one of 10 Nittany Lion student-athletes to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA during 2009-10.
The award honors student-athletes who earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher during the previous academic year. Penn State's 57 total honorees are second most in the Big Ten while the seven from women's swimming & diving are most among all Penn State sports.
The Nittany Lions impressed both athletically and academically in 2009-10. Eighteen were named Academic All-Big Ten honorees, also the most among any winter sport at Penn State. Meanwhile, Amy Modglin (For Myers, Fla.) had a breakout freshman campaign, which was capped off by honorable mention All-America laurels in the 200 backstroke. The squad also defeated nationally ranked and previously undefeated Ohio State while sweeping a quad meet at Pittsburgh. Modglin was named Big Ten and National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week following that meet as well.
