Soccer America Preseason Top 25
OAKLAND, Calif. - The 2010 Penn State women's soccer team earned a ranking of 11th by Soccer America on Wednesday in the publication's preseason poll. Penn State opens its season on Friday at West Virginia.
Penn State, who was ranked 13th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) last week, garnered its second top 15 ranking of the preseason. The 12-time defending Big Ten champions are the highest touted Big Ten squad with Wisconsin coming in at 16th.
Stanford topped the poll, while North Carolina was second. The two schools were flipped in the NSCAA poll released last week. Other notables in the poll are Portland (third) and Virginia (seventh). Penn State travels to the Nike Portland Invitational on Sept. 10 and will face the Pilots at Merlo Field on Sept. 12.
The Nittany Lions will tangle with the Cavaliers of Virginia for the third time in 12 months at Jeffrey Field as Penn State looks to pack the stands with a crowd of 4,500 for the home opener. A full promotional schedule for the 2010 home season will be released Tuesday, Aug. 24.
The Soccer America poll will be released every Monday throughout the season, while its Preseason All-America teams will be announced tomorrow. Soccer America eliminated its Team of the Week feature for this season.
Penn State opens its 2010 campaign when it travels to Morgantown, W. Va. for a clash with the Mountaineers of West Virginia on Friday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Stadium. PSU fans traveling to the game are urged to arrive early as a large crowd is expected. Tickets are available at the stadium for $1.
