UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men's golf head coach Greg Nye has been selected as the 2010 Division I NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season. Nye has earned the prestigious honor from the Golf Coaches Association of America eight times after 59 tournament titles, four NCAA berths, 17 NCAA Regional appearances, and four Eastern Championships.
"The coaching awards are generally a reflection on a team's effort, character, and achievement," said Nye. "Last year's team was no exception with how we turned around a tough year of injuries on the front half and rallied as a group to finish the year off as the team we thought we had at season's start. It was a very rewarding year."
The Eaton and Golf Pride sponsored award was earned by Nye after one of the most successful seasons in Nittany Lion golf history. After winning three regular season tournaments at the Rutherford, Kepler, and Pinehust Intercollegiate the Nittany Lions took a fourth place finish at Regionals and headed to the links of the NCAA Championships. The team competed in the 2010 NCAA National Championship for just the second time in the past three years and fourth under Nye.
In his 18 years at Penn State, Nye has guided his teams to national prominence, establishing golf in the northeast. The groundbreaking marches to NCAA Finals in 1996, 2004, 2008, and 2010 are major highlights of Nye's coaching resume. Nye has overseen the efforts of six All-Americans, 17 All-American scholars, and nine All-Big Ten players.
Nye enters his 19th season with two new freshman and some outstanding returning players. Nye will be available on Wednesday, Aug., 25, for the Penn State fall sports media day to answer questions and give insight on the exciting season ahead.
