UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Penn State senior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.) and freshman Michael Miller (Brewster, N.Y.) advanced to match play after qualifying through two rounds of stroke play at the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship. The five rounds of head-to-head competition begin today, Aug., 25 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
The two-round total 148 established the cut from the 312-person field to just 64. McDonagh posted a two-round total 146, carding a 71-75 (+3). Miller edged the field with rounds of 73-75 (+5) to establish his position in the first round of match play.
McDonagh, who is seeded 33rd will face of with No. 34 Brad Benjamin of Rockford, Ill., at 9 a.m. Miller, ranked 58th, will hit the links at 11:40 a.m. against the No. 7 seed Joseph Bramlet of Saratoga, Calif. Sophomore Ernesto Marin's 7-stroke improvement from round one was not enough to make the cut to match play. Marin posted rounds of 85-78 to finish at 20-over par (163).
