Women's Golf Team Finishes First Round of Cougar Classic

After the first round of its opening tournament of the season, the Penn State women's golf team is currently in a tie for seventh place out of 21 teams. The Nittany Lions put together a score of 297 for a 9-over-par at the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston in Hanahan, S.C.

The seniors led the Nittany Lions in the opening round of play. Seniors Giulia Carando (Torino, Italy) and Gia Fanelli (West Palm Beach, Fla.) each carded a 73 (+1). The 73 is a career best round for Carando. Carando and Fanelli are currently in a tie for 16th place.

Sophomore Hanule Seo (St. Louis, Mo.) followed close behind with a 74 (+2), leaving her in a tie for 27th place. The other starting sophomore Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) followed Seo with a 77 and a tie for 60th place. Freshman Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) rounded out the field for the Nittany Lions in her first-ever tournament with an 82 in the first round.

Courtney Gunter of North Carolina currently leads all individuals with a score of 69 (-3). North Carolina also led the tournament as a team, as they carded a 285 (-3) on the first day.

The Cougar Class will continue with the second round tomorrow, Sept. 13, with tee times starting at 8 a.m. The third and final round will be played on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
