Women's Tennis' Sandor and Simidian Advance to Second Round of Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) each picked up victories Friday to advanced to the second round of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland Texas. Sandor defeated Stephanie Davidson of Texas A&M, 2-6, 6-2, 12-10, while Simidian swept Tara Panu of Pepperdine, 6-2, 6-3.

Simidian was beaten in the second round by Ana Guzman of Rice, 6-2, 6-3, while Sandor was defeated by Mariayeni Gutierrez of Lamar, 6-3, 7-6. Petra Januskova, who was the fourth ranked player in the tournament and had a bye in the first round, lost 6-3, 6-1 to Rice's Dominique Harmath.

Marie-Frederique Bedard dropped a 6-3, 7-5 match to Julia Mongin of Abiline Christian in first round play. Additionally, Denisa Zobeideh lost to Alex Rasch of Rice, 6-1, 6-0, and Fernanda Perrotta lost a close match to Texas Tech's Haley Fournier, 4-6, 6-1, (10-8). Maria Prishlyak also lost in a close contest to Jo-Anne Karaitiana of Tulsa, 4-6, 6-2, (11-9). The final Penn State singles match was Sarah Henderson, who was beaten by Nebraska's Janine Weinreich, 6-2, 7-6.

The Nittany Lions will continue competition in the Midland Tournament tomorrow as doubles matches continue

After the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, the women's tennis team will compete in the Hokie Fall Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., October 1-3.
